In this artwork, the artist explores the philosophical roots of musical notation by drawing on the abstract forms of ancient neumes and their evolution into modern scores. Series: NeumeIn this art series, the artist explores the philosophical underpinnings of musical notation, tracing its evolution from the ancient neumes to contemporary scores. Neumes, early musical symbols from both Western and Eastern traditions, were abstract marks that sketched the contours of melodies rather than providing exact notes or rhythms.
They served as a guide through the emotional and melodic landscape, much like a roadmap of sound.
The artist uses silkworm patterns to embody this early notational language. Just as neumes suggested musical pathways without rigid detail, the silkworm’s intricate weaving creates a delicate and evolving fabric.
This series transforms the ethereal essence of neumatic notation into a visual dialogue, celebrating its historical impact and its seamless transition into modern musical documentation. The works reflect on the profound relationship between ancient notation and contemporary art, highlighting how primitive forms bridge the gap between intuition and precision.
