The can
Dragos Lumpan
1.200 € – 5.900 €
In this captivating photograph, the artist captures a unique moment from an Aromanian shepherd’s daily life in Greece. Traditionally, shepherds rely on dogs to guide their sheep, but this particular shepherd found an unconventional solution. Without a dog to assist him, he used a simple can as a remote control to direct his flock. The can, accidentally dropped near the sheep, served as an unexpected beacon, guiding them in the right direction. The image vividly illustrates the shepherd’s resourcefulness and the surprising ways in which everyday objects can become tools for managing and communicating with livestock.

Series: The Last Transhumance
“The Last Transhumance” series delves into the ancient practice of seasonal livestock movement, where shepherds guide their herds between mountain and lowland pastures to sustain and protect them. This time-honored tradition, essential for the well-being of both livestock and landscapes, is depicted in “The Last Transhumance” through an extensive artistic, ethnographic, and sociological lens. Spanning 15 years and covering over 50,000 kilometers across six countries, the project captures the profound transition occurring within this millennial practice.Through a combination of photography and film, the series documents the gradual disappearance of a way of life that has shaped cultures and landscapes for centuries. “The Last Transhumance” presents a compelling narrative of change, illustrating the enduring yet increasingly endangered heritage of transhumance. It offers an evocative exploration of the shepherds’ journey, the intimate connection between them and their environment, and the broader implications of this cultural shift on both people and nature.
