Horses in Letea

1.200 5.900

This artwork is a poignant part of the “People and Deltas” project, begun in January 2010. Despite the project’s title, the harsh winter conditions in the Danube Delta proved too severe for human subjects to be present. Instead, the photograph captures the stark, icy landscape of the Delta, where the biting cold has driven people indoors. In place of human figures, the artist turned to the region’s horses, whose presence adds a vital element to the composition.

Series: People and Deltas
The “People and Deltas” series challenges the conventional portrayal of deltas, which are often highlighted for their rich biodiversity and natural beauty, overshadowing the human element. A quick search for images of any delta, such as the Danube Delta, reveals an overwhelming focus on flora and fauna, with scant representation of local inhabitants. Similarly, texts like those on Wikipedia allocate extensive discussion to the ecological aspects of deltas while relegating the human population to a brief mention.

In response to this oversight, “People and Deltas” shifts the focus to the daily lives and environments of the people residing in three distinct deltas: the Danube Delta in Romania, the Kızılırmak Delta in Turkey, and the Ebro Delta in Spain. By centering on the human experience, this series highlights how the residents interact with and adapt to their unique landscapes, offering a more holistic view of delta life. The artwork captures the interplay between people and their environments, bringing to light the often-overlooked stories of those who live amidst the natural splendor of these vital regions.
