Being & Nothingness I
Nora Cupcencu
3.500 €
This Self-Portrait captures the artist’s journey through a transformative period of anxiety. Inspired by The Hanged Man from the Marseille Tarot, who finds insight by viewing life upside down, the artist adopted a suspended perspective to gain new revelations.
This approach led to a profound shift in their worldview, allowing them to overcome emotional barriers and reconnect with the vibrant essence of life’s eroticism.

Series: Eros& Thanatos
The “Eros & Thanatos” series is a profound exploration of the intertwined forces of Eroticism, Sensuality, Death, and Transgression. Drawing on the philosophical ideas of Georges Bataille, the artist delves into the complex relationship between human impulses and the fear they often evoke. Bataille’s assertion that the human spirit is in constant conflict with its own desires provides a foundational lens through which the works in this series are created.Through this body of work, the artist seeks to confront and reconcile the tension between asceticism and pleasure. By examining the cosmic pull of sexual energy as a fundamental, impersonal force, the artist reveals how eroticism transcends mere physicality, intertwining with the concept of death. The series navigates the delicate boundary between life and death, where individuality dissolves, echoing the continuity and discontinuity of existence as described by Bataille.
The artist employs gestural automatism and visual expressions to connect with the subconscious, channeling memories of sexual impulses and exploring their connection to mortality. Through automatic drawing and dynamic compositions, the works invite viewers to reflect on the multifaceted nature of human sexuality—its pleasures, its transcendent qualities, and its deep emotional resonances.
“Eros & Thanatos” is a mosaic of personal identity, a reflection of the artist’s quest to understand their place in the world by unifying the disparate elements of desire, fear, and mortality into a cohesive artistic statement. The series challenges viewers to engage with the profound questions of existence, identity, and the universal human experience of navigating the spaces between life and death, pleasure and transgression.
