Lives and works in Bucharest.
Mirela Iordache, born in 1978 and based in Bucharest, is a prominent Romanian artist known for her experimental and abstract works. She graduated from the University of Bucharest in 2002 with a degree in Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage Restoration, and she earned a Master’s degree in Painting from the National University of Arts in Bucharest in 2014.
Over nearly two decades, Mirela has showcased her work in over 90 solo, group, and collective exhibitions across Romania, France, Germany, Belgium, and Japan. Her art is characterized by a remarkable versatility, encompassing a wide range of styles and techniques from photorealism and neo-expressionism to abstract forms. She explores various mediums including painting, linocut, drypoint, photography, collage, assemblage, and land art.
In recent years, her work has evolved towards a stylistic intersection of abstract expressionism, gesturalism, and lyrical abstraction. Her purely experimental approach, which she terms “entropic abstract,” is exemplified in her project #Entropomorfe, which debuted in 2017 in Bucharest. This project explores gestural painting and the controlled physical interactions and chemical reactions between diverse materials.
Mirela describes her studio practice as a symphony of colors, strokes, and material interactions. She views the manifestation of color, material, and ideas as a spiritual experience embedded in each canvas. For her, the diversity of chromatic forms engages in dialogue with architecture, generating imaginative sounds. As colors awaken and anticipate the emergence of signs and gestures, her ideas, once in the “gestation” phase, take shape and bring new representations from the imaginary to the viewer.
Mirela Iordache’s artistic contributions have been honored with various awards and nominations, including the “Arte de Arte” Prize in 2014, a nomination for the STRABAG Artaward International in 2013, and residencies in Briare, France in 2010 and Le Barcarès, France in 2011. Her notable exhibitions include the International Painting Biennale in Chișinău in 2017 and 2023, the Ne/ow Art at Cantacuzino Castle in 2018, the Blue Biennale in Brașov and the National Art Biennale “Camil Ressu” in Galați in 2019. She was awarded the “Miron Duca” Prize for cultural projects in painting at the Bistrița-Năsăud Museum Complex in 2024.
